Live From Prairie Lights: Translator Carl Skoggard—The Sonnets of Walter Benjamin

Walter Benjamin (1892—1940) was a German philosopher and cultural critic and one of the most important theorists of the 20th century. These 73 poems, written to mourn his friend Fritz Heinle, constitute an important, though little-known, part of Benjamin's literary achievement and a unique contribution to the history of the German sonnet. Carl Skoggard will read his English translations of these previously unpublished poems, and Iowa City musician and writer Liv Carrow will read the sonnets in their original language. This is Skoggard’s third translation of Benjamin’s work. Following the reading, Carl Skoggard will be glad to answer questions about the life and career of Benjamin, as well as modern poetry in the Weimar period. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Jan Weissmiller in advance at
