Program Description

The English Department offers an English and Creative Writing major for undergraduates, along with its major in English. The writing major builds from traditions of literary analysis and artistic practice that have distinguished the university. Majors study with established and emerging writers, in a rigorous 42 credit-hour sequence involving intensive reading and workshop engagement in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, criticism, translating, playwriting, and other fields. For graduate students, the department houses the unparalleled Nonfiction Writing program, which offers an MFA degree that fosters creative treatment of journalism, memoir, cultural criticism, digital writing, and the essay form. The department hosts readings by creators, scholars, and critics, building a literary community inside and outside the university to which all are welcome.
