There's a reason "Fun Home," the latest production from the University of Iowa Theatre Arts Department, won five Tony Awards and was nominated for 12 in 2015 for its Broadway production.

It's partially why the story John Cameron, director of the "Fun Home" production and professor at UI, wanted to stage the story of a young woman coming out and reflecting on her parents through her grown-up perspective.

"I told our director of theater I wanted to stage it a couple years ago when the show first won the Tony's because I am gay and I was so impressed how the subject matter was handled in this show," Cameron said.

The musical centers around Allison Bechdel, the cartoonist who has won the MacArthur Genius Award and the inventor of the Bechdel Test, as she reflects on her family growing up.
