IOWA PRISON WRITING PROJECT

To De . . .

LEIGH LAZ L., IOWA

Waterfalls of brilliant light . . .
    A hazy shade of grey . . .
I walked along the beaten path
    To an unforgotten place.
Where memories are silhouettes
    That dance inside my head,
Though with passing days
    The light does fade,
And soon these shadows will be dead.
    As the darkness grows closer
To the shore of where I rest,
I call out of my courageous heart
but find there’s nothing left.
So I look inside my laden soul
in search of dreams to be,
    Though sitting in this neverland
These dreams I cease to see.
So I climb atop a broken box
And peer inside its walls
    To reflect upon the emptiness
Of which I can’t recall.
And so on this beach of hazy grey
I guess I’ll simply fade away—
