Five Reads for Friday: Oct 23, 2020

October 23, 2020

At the University of Iowa, we love our writers, our programs, we love our graduates and our students -- and we love the wealth of literature that they gift us, simply by being part of our community.

We have created "5 Reads for Friday" as an easy, laid-back series, compiling a short list of inspirational, helpful and fun treasures from our family to yours. Enjoy what you find, take what you need, and be well.

  • From the Iowa Review archives: A Valediction, Garth Greenwell, 2013

"I was eager to leave then, feeling a need to escape from this house and from the weight, so palpable somehow, of what filled it, those mounds of labor mocking any thought of excavation, and mocking too my own dreams of accomplishment."

  • From the Writing University archives: Kiley Reid reading, Live from Prairie Lights, January 24, 2020

Iowa Writers' Workshop graduate Kiley Reid reads from and talks about her new novel, Such a Fun Age. This debut novel dives headfirst into matters of race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.

  •  From the Literary Translation MFA: 5Q Interview with Shene Mohammed, MFA candidate in Literary Translation

"I am from Slemani, a rich literary hub in the Kurdish Region of Iraq. So, it feels like home twice, a place I was born and grew up in and the literary atmosphere I like to live within."

  • From the Center for UI Advancement:  Channel your creativity during the Alumni and Friends Hawkeye Haiku Contest.

The UI Center for Advancement is accepting submissions until November 18. Plenty of time to count your syllables!

  • From our Online Writing Courses: Hidden Meanings: Creative Fiction, Non-fiction, and Facts

This MOOC-Pack takes a creative fiction and non-fiction approach to understanding and recognizing information, misinformation, and disinformation.

    And that's it!
We hope you enjoy. And check back each week for a new list.
