The Writing University website has initiated a new ongoing project for creating in-depth biographies of the writers associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa City. The biographies feature documentation of the emotional and intellectual connection between Iowa City and the writers who have been students and/or teachers at the University of Iowa's multiple writing programs. It aims to display how these writers, poets, translators, and publicists invented Iowa City as a city of literature, as much as Iowa City and the University of Iowa helped invent them as masters of the word.

The project began in the fall of 2009 and is now announcing its launch with the profiles of Raymond Carver, Rita Dove, Donald Justice, John Irving, Flannery O’Connor, Kurt Vonnegut, and Tennessee Williams.
