Writing in the City of Literature

With Lan Samantha Chang, Curtis Sittenfeld, Alexander Maksik, Susanna Daniel, Friday event “Writing in the City of Literature,” a fundraiser to support the Book Festival, brings together writers affiliated with the UI Writers’ Workshop to discuss the writing life in Iowa City and how it has shaped their careers. The event will present authors including Writers’ Workshop Director Lan Samantha Chang (All is Forgotten, Nothing is Lost), bestselling novelist Curtis Sittenfeld (Prep, Sisterland), Alexander Maksik (A Marker to Measure Drift), and Susanna Daniel (Sea Creatures).

Marathon Poetry Reading

Members of the group Reading Aloud will read the entirety of the book Open Door: 100 Years 100 Poems. The reading will take place on the Festival Stage in front of the Sheraton Hotel on the ped mall between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

A Kofi Awoonor Memorial Reading with Kwame Dawes

Celebrated Ghanaian poet and writer Kofi Awoonor was among those killed in the attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. A live-stream memorial reading of his poetry, hosted by Awoonor’s nephew, poet and Ida Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor Kwame Dawes, will take place in front of a live audience at Shambaugh House, on the University of Iowa campus.
