Progress Made in UI Campus Flood Recovery

Among the buildings on the University of Iowa campus, some of the most adversely affected by the 2008 flood were buildings central to art studies and programming. The Art and Art History buildings, the University’s Museum of Art, Hancher Auditorium, and the School of Music were all damaged or destroyed during the flood.

Recently, progress was made on the move toward recovery when the Iowa Board of Regents approved plans to build a new $175 million Hancher Auditorium, a $152 million School of Music across campus in

Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduate Philip Levine ('57 MFA), “best known for his big-hearted, Whitmanesque poems about working-class Detroit” was named the new U.S. Poet Laureate this year. “I find him an extraordinary discovery because he introduced me to a whole new world I hadn’t connected to in poetry before,” James Billington, the librarian of Congress, told the New York Times on Monday. “He’s the laureate, if you like, of the industrial heartland.
