In December, former UI faculty member Dean Young underwent emergency heart surgery and had a transplant operation in April. While Young's insurance through the University of Texas at Austin covered the surgery, poet and novelist Joseph DiPrisco, chair of the Dean Young fundraising efforts, explained that Young's out-of-pocket expenses will be about $50,000 a year. Young was born with a heart defect. Writers' Workshop Faculty, James Galvin, Mark Levine, and Cal Bedient were joined by Robyn Schiff, Director of The University of Iowa's Undegraduate Creative Writing Program, International Writing Program Director Christopher Merrill and Prairie Lights' Jan Weissmiller to read from Dean Young's work.
