The Writing University website hosted Ilya Kaminsky, one of this fall’s Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professors at the University of Iowa in a Live Discussion at 10:30 a.m. (CST) Monday, Sept. 18th. Kaminsky is the author of two volumes of poetry, and his work has been recognized by the Lannan Foundation, PEN America, the National Book Critics Circle, and the Whiting Foundation, among others. Kaminsky, who has been deaf since the age of four, has also received Poetry magazine’s prestigious Levinson Prize for poems from his new manuscript, Deaf Republic. In addition to his creative work, Kaminski is the co-founder of Poets for Peace, an organization which sponsors poetry readings in the U.S. and abroad with a goal of supporting such relief organizations as Doctors Without Borders and Survivors International.

Kristin Hatch is a graduate of the Writers’ Workshop in poetry. Recent poems have been published in FENCE, Lo Ball, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. She currently lives in San Francisco, where she is a grants and membership coordinator at Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.

Edan Lepucki is a graduate of the Workshop in fiction and winner of a 2009 James D. Phelan Award from the Intersection for the Arts and the San Francisco Foundation. her recent work has been published in Cutbank, LA Times Magazine, and Meridian. She currently lives in L.A., where she founded and runs the L.A. Writing Workshops. She is also a regular contributor to The Millions blog.

Thomas Pletzinger (fiction writer, novelist, translator, editor; b. 1975 Germany) has worked and studied in Hamburg, Leipzig and New York. His stories and poems have appeared in magazines such as BELLAtriste, EDIT and sprachgebunden. The short story “Bruck on the Floor Sings as Quietly as Monk Plays” won him the 2006 MDR-Literature-Prize. A Dog’s Funeral is his first novel.

The Writing University website hosted an online chat with Irish poet Eavan Boland at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Boland discussed poetry, writing in an international community, as well as other literary topics.

Boland, who attended the International Writing Program residency in 1979, has published nine volumes of poetry, as well as two volumes of prose. Her awards include the Lannan Foundation Award in Poetry and an American Ireland Fund Literary Award. She is a member of the Irish Academy of Letters and the advisory board of the International Writers Center at Washington University. She is professor of English at Stanford University and director of the creative writing program.
